A few quick thoughts on the Red Sox today:
- They’re playing better the last week and they’re back at .500, just four games back in the wildcard hunt
- There should be hope because they are still a fairly talented team; of course they have their flaws but overall they’re not nearly as bad as a 5th place team in the AL East would normally be this late in the season.
- ESPN shows each team’s playoff percentage next to their record in the standings. Every other last place team in MLB (5 other divisions) is at 0.1% chance of making the playoffs, and another seven teams in second-to-last or third-to-last are listed as 0.1% chance of making the playoffs. The Red Sox? They’re at 13%. In fact, they are 13% while the team ahead of them in the standings is just 4% chance. So whatever formula is used to calculate those percentages, they like the Red Sox chances at least a little more than 14 other teams out there. Not bad for a last place team.
They still need to find a way to sign Xander Bogaerts and Raffy Devers. it’ll be a disaster if they can’t sign their own home-grown all-star level players.
One thing at a time. First make the playoffs. Then win the AL Pennant. Then the World Series. And THEN sign Raffy and the X Man.
Easy Peasy.
